Scientific and technological innovations are the key drivers for growth and economic prosperity of a nation. In the 21st century, as basic and applied sciences converge, there is an immediate need to train competent researchers. Towards this, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India has set up 5 Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) at Bhopal, Kolkata, Mohali, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram at a cost of Rs. 500 crores each.

1. I am a class XII science student, what course can I apply for in IISER?
5-year BS-MS dual degree programme. For more information about the course go to Question 21.
2. How do I get admission to the BS-MS dual degree programme in IISERs?
To seek an admission, you should apply through at least one of the three channels. (a) KVPY (SA(2009)/SX(2010)/SB(2010)/SP(Passed 10+2 in 2010/2011) (b) IIT-JEE (Rank in regular merit list & 60 % marks in class XII) (c) Direct Admission(Class XII in 2010 &2011; Class X in 2008, 2009; Cut-off % is available in DST website (http://dst.gov.in/))
3. What is the intake of students in 2011?
Each IISER: 100. Total : 500
4. What is the intake through different channels?
KVPY Maximum : 125
IIT-JEE Maximum : 125
Direct : 500 Minus (Total number admitted through KVPY and JEE)
5. Do I need to apply separately for each channel?
Yes
6. Can I apply through more than one channel?
Yes. Requires separate application for each channel.
7. Does reservation of seats apply for admission?
Yes. As per Govt. of India rules: 15% SC; 7.5% ST; 27% OBC (non-creamy) of the total intake. Reservation for the PD candidates: 3% of each category.
8. How do I apply?

9. When should I apply?
Check IISER admission website between mid May to end of June 2011. See Question 22.
10. Is there an application fee?
Yes. Non-refundable application fee for each admission channel:
(1) Rs. 500/- for General/OBC applicants.
(2) Rs. 250/- for SC/ST
11. What is the mode of payment?
Through Bank transfer. Details will be announced later.
12. Is there any financial support for admitted students?
Yes. Subject to satisfactory academic performance at IISER, all students admitted to IISERs are eligible for INSPIRE/KVPY Scholarship of Rs. 5000/- per month. More details can be found at the following URLs:

13. Can I be a day-scholar at IISER?
No. IISER students are required to stay in campus hostels.
14. Are all candidates satisfying the eligibility criteria admitted to IISERs?
No. Admission is based on ranking in
(1) KVPY
(2) IIT-JEE and
(3) Aptitude test conducted jointly by IISERs.
15. How do I make my choice of IISER?
You will be asked to give your preferences at the time of counseling.
16. Do I get the IISER of my choice?
The allotment is on the basis of the applicant's choice and rank.
17. Can I transfer my admission from one IISER to another at any time?
NO. Allotment to an IISER is final. No application for transfer to another IISER will be entertained.
18. Is there a fee for counseling?
Yes. A non-refundable fee of
(1) Rs. 1000/- for General/OBC applicants
(2) Rs. 500/- for SC/ST
19. When and where will the counseling be held?
You can choose any one of the IISERs for counseling while applying. See Q23 for tentative dates.
20. Will all applicants be called for counseling?
No. Only shortlisted candidates will be called for counseling.
21. Is there a interview at the time of counseling?
No.
22. What is the curriculum structure for BS-MS dual degree programme?
For the first four semesters, all students will take common courses in all disciplines (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics) & Humanities. IISER Kolkata has BS-MS in earth sciences also. From the fifth semester onwards, one may opt for courses in one or more areas. The final year will be devoted to a research project.

24. What is the syllabus for the IISER aptitude test for direct admission?
CBSE classes 11th and 12th standard syllabus in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics
25. How many papers are there?
Only one paper of maximum 2 hours with equal weightage for Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
